AutoNSider Review | Mercedes 550e 4MATIC

This vehicle could literally save your life...

This vehicle could save your life if you’re destined to be one of the one-out-of-ten people killed in “one-vehicle crashes”… but more on that in a moment.

The GLE is Mercedes’ best selling SUV. It’s their two-row, five-passenger mid-sized SUV that faces increasingly strong competition from their “friends” in Europe, Japan, and the USA.

While Lexus stretched their popular RX a bit to accommodate an optional third row, Mercedes distinguishes itself by giving us the option of having a plug-in hybrid that you “fill-up” in your garage each night. While not EPA rated yet, those that have tested Mercedes’ 550e 4MATIC have experienced in the neighborhood of 43 combined city/highway mpg. That’s more than twice Mercedes’ conventional gas-only GLE’s 21 MPG. Big difference.

And there’s a big difference in performance, too. Our test GLE 550e had the “regular” GLE’s 3.0 bi-turbo V-6 PLUS the plug-in electric motor giving you a combined 436 HP and a 5.2-second sprint to 60… vs, the conventional V-6’s 7.5 seconds.

Yes… big difference.

GLEs start in the low $50’s… and go all the way past $100,000 for an almost-race-ready twin-turbo V-8 AMG version.

The window-sticker on our test 550e 4Matic started in the mid-$60’s… and included those two 436 combined HP motors routed through a 7-speed auto plus 19’s, heated leather, Android Auto and Apple Car Play, blind spot warnings, crosswind assist, active emergency braking, trailer assist and Mercedes’ “Pre-Safe”.

And it’s Pre-Safe that just might save your rear-end.

Be honest.

Have you ever found yourself nodding off while driving?

New AAA studies have found that 10% of previously unexplained one-vehicle accidents are caused by drivers falling asleep. That’s three times what the government previously thought. While it may sound Big-Brother-ish, Mercedes Pre-Safe monitors you… the driver… roughly 70 different ways and will alert you with sound and motion if it senses that you are nodding off.

Just as backup cams have become the norm, this technology… hopefully… will be standard on all vehicles in the coming years.

But if you want it today… it’s Mercedes who leads the way.

As for utility, Mercedes has found a way to give you the same cargo space in the GLE 550e as in the non-hybrid version... 38.2 cu ft behind the second row, and 80.3 cu ft with the second row folded down.

Need more?  Invest another 5 – 10K and get an AMG interior… black 20’s, massaging front seats, surround-view, active lane control, LED lighting, blind spot, and parking assist… in other words, virtually every electronic aid known to man these days.

But it’s Mercedes “Pre-Safe” that gives them a competitive advantage that no one else has at this moment.

Stay tuned!
