What I learned from Oprah's 2020 Vision Tour

January 28, 2020 - 5:00 am

I recently attended Oprah’s 2020 Vision Tour in partnership with Weight Watchers here in Atlanta at the State Farm Arena. Although I was there to enjoy myself, the journalist in me left the one-day event, knowing it was my responsibility to blog about it with our WAOK community.

The day started on a low note after my dear friend informed me that she had an eye infection and could not attend. Luckily, I was able to find someone willing to claim the second ticket and commit to an all-day Saturday event at the last minute.

My guest and I arrived around 10:15 am, and the arena was filled to the brim with roughly 12,000 attendees who came for one reason; to see Oprah Winfrey.

Walking through the arena was like a dream come true for a real Lady O fan. Huge cutouts of her were placed throughout the entire building for attendees to take pics and being an eager fan, I had to indulge!

The tour was presented by Weight Watchers and their staff were on hand to assist with any questions or needs to ensure that you enjoyed your experience. There were also beauty stations where attendees could receive pampered services.

Once you arrived at your seat, a stylish burlap bag filled with goodies was waiting for you. Attendees were also presented with lunch tickets for a boxed lunch.

As we made settled in our seats, gospel singer Tamala Mann sang an inspiring selection.

Shortly afterward, media mogul Oprah Winfrey graced the stage and was welcomed with roaring applause. Always classy, Winfrey wore a tan pilot jumpsuit with accents of gold zippers and cream and gold tennis shoes. Her hair was flawless, and I noticed she wore her signature double ban gold ring.

I have to admit; initially, I was less than thrilled when I learned that the event was a seven-hour experience and was planning to cut out early.

However, after two minutes of listening to Winfrey breakdown the what, when, and why behind the tour I knew that me being there was not happenstance; it was destiny. The introduction set a tone for the entire day, which shockingly went by quickly.

Oprah was present throughout the whole day, guiding attendees through a series of self-reflections, leading to a personal 2020 action plan.

She stated that the goal of the workbook was to help us write out the vision and focus of our lives and it would help us see ourselves clearly.  She emphasized that you must know what you want and continuously stressed the importance of balance, self-care, self-love, and understanding the power of being your authentic self.

Other moments during the event featured a meditation lesson where the entire arena was quiet in medication for one minute.

The day was reenergized after lunch with Emmy Award-winning choreographer Julianne Hough walking everyone through her new dance technique called Kingery that is meant to realign the mind and body awakening a spirit of love and gratitude.

Weight Watcher CEO Mindy Grossman came out on the stage with Oprah to talk about the purpose and history of the company.

Grossman also highlighted a local man named Eric Pimentel who overcame a dark era in his life by being in Weight Watchers. Our very own Maria Boynton spoke with him about his journey.

Oprah also sat down with Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson for a one on one interview. They discussed the emotional impact he went through after the recent passing of his dad and the ebbs and flows of his life as a wrestler, actor, and dad.  I also learned that the wrestler turned actor has a house about 35 miles outside of the city limits and is the only male featured guest on the 2020 vision tour.

Being here in Atlanta, the best local moment was when Oprah brought out a dancer who graduated from the Atlanta based HBCU Morehouse College.

At the end of the day, here is what I learned from attending Oprah's 2020 Vision: Your Life in Focus Tour presented by Weight Watchers.

I learned to be still and trust that quiet voice in my spirit telling me that I was born to be more,  do more, and want more for myself.  I walked away excited about taking better care of my body and mind. But more importantly,  knowing I have a large WW community willing to see me through my journey if I decide to use the tools provided through their online app and weekly meetings. I also learned to live with intention and value my authentic self.

Plainly put, I learned to own my life and quit selling talents and abilities for less and invest in myself!  Overall it was a day of healing, balance, and self-awareness. In the words of Lady O, "What I know for sure is" that I went to see Oprah Winfrey, but I found me.
