The Southern Center for Human Rights is known for their fight against hatred, bigotry, and indifference to justice. Just recently, the organization bestowed their highest honors to the legal defense team for Basil Eleby and Former Acting Attorney General Sally Yates.

SCHR’s core purpose is to protect the civil and human rights of people of color, poor people, and other disadvantaged people facing the death penalty or confined to prisons and jails in the South.

Mawuli Davis and four other attorney's willingness to stand in the gap for Basil Eleby, a homeless drug addict accused of starting a fire that caused a portion of I-85 to collapse, is why SCHR awarded this extraordinary team their prestige Gideons Promise Award.

Former Acting Attorney General Sally Yates was honored with the Luminary Award which recognizes superior contributions to justice, fairness and demonstrates the willingness to speak truth to power when it matters most.

Sally Yates’esteemed accomplishments and defiance against President Trump’s travel ban shows that she is more than deserving of the SCHR’s 2018 Luminary Award.
