Rayshard Brooks was a 27-year-old married father of four with three girls ages 8, 2, and 1, as well as a 13-year-old stepson.

His attorney, L. Chris Stewart, said that on Friday, Brooks was celebrating his eldest daughter's 8th birthday, CBS News reports

"A man that, earlier that day, was celebrating his daughter's 8th birthday at the arcade," Stewart said. "He has little girls who are 8, 2, and 1 - and a stepson, 13: who we sat with today, and watched them play and laugh and be oblivious to the face that their dad was murdered."

Meanwhile, family members have stressed how much Brooks was loved. "He had family," his cousin said in a tearful statement on Saturday. "Brothers and sisters and big cousins, he got family."

While at a drive-thru Wendy's in Atlanta, two police officers stopped Brooks when he was found asleep in his car.

According to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, he failed a sobriety test, and struggle ensued when an officer tried to cuff him. Brooks attempted to take a Taser from an officer when the officer shot at him. The officer, Garrett Rolfe, has since been fired.

The shooting comes amidst anti-police brutality protests across the nation in the wake of George Floyd's death.
