Qualifying Underway for Rep. Lewis’ 5th District Seat

Qualifying starts today to fill the late Congressman John Lewis’ unexpired term.  The special election will be held on September 29 according to the Office of Governor Brian Kemp.

The 5th District includes parts of Clayton, DeKalb, and Fulton counties. If necessary, a runoff will be held on December 1.

The Democratic Party of Georgia has decided that Chairwoman Nikema Williams will replace Lewis on the ballot in November.

Candidates for the upcoming special election can qualify through 1:00 pm Friday afternoon in the Elections Division of the Secretary of State’s office. According to the Secretary of State qualifying begins at 9:00 this morning and ends at 5:00 pm; Thursday-July 30-qualifying begins at 8:00 am and ends at 5:00 pm; and Friday, July 31, qualifying begins at 8:00 am and ends at 1:00 pm.

The qualifying fee is $5,220.00.  The Elections Division is inside the Twin Towers State Building, 2 MLK Jr. Drive, in Atlanta.

You must be registered to vote by August 31 in order to cast a ballot in the special election.
