Georgia House of Represenatives Approves New City From Stockbridge Land

Residents in Stockbridge tried to get the House of Representatives to vote down a proposal that could lead to the split of the city.

Unfortunately, the proposal passed by a vote of 102 to 67 late Tuesday and would incorporate the new city of Eagles Landing from land currently in Stockbridge.

A crowd rallied at the state capitol yesterday because some fear the split would raise property taxes and some say that the move is also racially motivated. Stockbridge is predominantly black, while Eagle’s Landing has a higher proportion of white residents. The measure must return to the Senate to approve changes made by the House. If the bill is signed into law, voters in the area that would become Eagles Landing would need to pass the idea before the new city is formed.

It is unknown if the bill will come up for a final vote before the end of this session.
