A $10K reward is announced by police in Atlanta for information leading to an arrest for the murder of well-known actor Thomas Jefferson Byrd. Anyone with information can call Crime Stoppers at 404-577-TIPS (8477) or they can report a tip online.

According to Atlanta Police Byrd was found dead of multiple gunshot wounds around 1:45 Saturday morning in the front yard of a home on Belvedere Avenue in Atlanta.  APD says Byrd had been shot several times in the back.  A statement from APD says “Homicide detectives responded to the scene and are working to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident. The investigation continues at this time.”

Atlanta police also tell V103 News that they are actively working to determine who’s responsible for Byrd’s death.

The Tony-nominated actor had appeared in several films over the years. Thomas Byrd was 70 years old.

Fellow Atlanta actor and longtime friend Afemo Omilami tells V103’s Maria Boynton that Byrd was a man who “loved his family, loved God, and loved the gift that God had given him.”

Omilami knew Byrd for at least 30 years. “We always had nothing but the highest respect for each other” says Omilami. He adds that Byrd “was a powerful force to be reckoned with.”

Director Spike Lee posted to social media over the weekend about Byrd’s death “May Brother Byrd be flying through those Heavenly Pearly Gates.”

Byrd appeared in several Spike Lee movies including “Da Sweet Blood of Jesus”, “He Got Game”,   “Bamboozled”, “Clockers”, and “Chi-Raq”. His talents went beyond the screen to the stag. Byrd’s Tony nomination was for the Broadway revival of “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” in 2003.
