Georgia’s 5th Congressional District seat will advance to a runoff election. Kwanza Hall and Robert Franklin were the two forerunners to secure 60% of the majority vote collectively but less than 50% individual to avoid a runoff election.

The Dec. 1 runoff winner will serve about a month, leaving voters to decide in the general election between Republican Angela Stanton King and Democrat Nikema Williams for the full two-year term that begins in January.

Lewis died in July from pancreatic cancer after 17 terms in Congress. Because he died after winning the primary election, Georgia Democrats chose a new nominee without a primary, placing Williams, the party chair, and a state senator, on the November ballot.
