Students in Cobb County and Henry County will be able to return to in-person learning in October.

Cobb County school officials announced on the district's website, that the decision was made due to COVID-19 cases in the county trending "in a positive direction."

Parents can begin choosing the option next week, or they can also choose to continue remote learning. The choice can be submitted beginning at 8 a.m. On Sept. 7 through the Parentvue portal. And will close at midnight on Sept. 20.

Here are the phases and the dates of the phases:

Phase One: All kindergarten through fifth-grade students will return for full-day instruction. ASP will also resume for students in face-to-face classrooms on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday. All low incidence pre-K through 12th-grade special education students will be given a face-to-face classroom option during phase one. Phase one will begin on Oct. 5, 2020.

Phase Two: All sixth through eighth-grade students for full-day instruction. Phase two will tentatively begin on Oct. 19, 2020.

Phase Three: All ninth through 12th-grade students for full-day instruction. Phase three will tentatively begin on Nov. 5, 2020. This is a Thursday start date because of Election Day.

In Henry County, the school district's Superintendent, Mary Elizabeth Davis, also presented details of a gradual return to in-school learning for Henry County students. The Henry County Board of Education unanimously approved the plan during a special called meeting on Monday.

As COVID-19 infection rates continue to decline, District leaders say they are monitoring cases using the Georgia Department of Health information. Davis added that the district is also maintaining a COVID Data Tracker that informs the community on the weekly number of students, staff, and visitors who have tested positive for the disease.

Like parents in Cobb County, parents in Henry County will also choose to continue with full-time remote learning or allow students to attend school both on campus and remotely to start.

Last week, Davis detailed the four-phase plan via the district's Return-to-Campus Playbook.

On Monday, dates were added to the timeline.

Phase 1 is scheduled to begin on Sept. 14. This involves all employees returning to schools. Employees' school-age children are permitted to accompany their parents to campus.

Phase 2 Sept. 28, will see students return to campus based on their last name.

Pre-K through grade 12 students with the last names starting with A-M will attend Monday and Tuesday.

Pre-K through grade 12 students with the last names starting N-Z will go Thursday and Friday.

Pre-K through grade 12 students in self-contained programs will attend Monday-Friday.

All other days students will take part in remote learning and independent learning activities.
